Content creation story

After releasing multiple apps I quickly realized that marketing/content was a missing part in my arsenal, so I started learning how. At that time we got our cat Alice, and it was the perfect time to practice - who doesn't like kitty videos?

We got traction pretty fast by combining funny moments when she was a kitten with the right music. Key learning was that it's important to create a dopamine kick for reels. Music and an 'aha/smile' moment should match perfectly - this created a viral effect (examples below).

In total we got around 300K views on the account. That's a pretty cool feeling when your reel hits the algorithm - your phone explodes with notifications for a few minutes and then it's over. It might happen again in a few days but for us that's how we got 20K+ views on some of our reels.

Another key learning was that the 'aha' moment should kick in pretty quickly - within 5-8 seconds. The attention span nowadays is incredibly small.

Even though it's tricky to monetize reels/shorts, they can usually be a great lead generator to long-form videos or your product, which I'm gonna share next.

How shorts doubled sales on a product

After learning the basics with Alice's content, I decided to apply these skills to actual product marketing. The results were surprising - a single well-timed short could double weekly sales.

The obvious beauty of such content is that you create it once, and it keeps bringing you traffic. This short, though, took some time to create and edit.

Boring images are most downloaded

I started Unsplash a few years ago, just with a purpose to learn how to take stills and understand what is mostly used. An interesting observation was that people need a lot of 'boring photos'. So I took my camera and went for a walk hunting for 'numbers' - just nice, unusual numbers on buildings. Initial uploads didn't show any interest, but over time they got quite a lot of downloads.

Conclusion

All of these experiments equipped me with practical knowledge of how to create content. Obviously not all reels, videos and photos got a lot of attention. Perhaps only 5-10% got a viral effect. But this is fine, this is actually the purpose of learning what works and what doesn't.
